Long before it was dubbed the teardrop island or the pearl of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka was known in the epics as Lanka, the kingdom of King Ravana. It is here that one of humanity's oldest and most enduring stories reached its climax. Here Ravana is said to have brought Sita following her abduction. Here Hanuman crossed the seas in search of her. Here Rama's army is said to have laid a bridge over the ocean, and here good and evil fought their final battle on Lankan soil. For millions of people around the world, Sri Lanka isn't just an exotic island but a living verse in the story of the Ramayana, and walking through it is a chance to revisit that epic in person.

This 8-day journey follows that trail closely, but takes its time doing it. It moves from the coastal temples of Chilaw, where Rama is said to have sought forgiveness after the war, up into the leafy hills of Nuwara Eliya and further south into Yala, where the Ashoka Vatika grove and the Ravana Ella caves keep the story alive in stone and legend. You'll stand at Ravana's own shrine on Swami Rock in Trincomalee, trace Hanuman's footprints through the misty hills of Ramboda, and end your search for Sita at the very temple built around her captivity.

But this trip isn't only about the epic. Sri Lanka has layered thousands of years of its own history on top of that ancient story. There's the rock fortress of Sigiriya rising out of the jungle, the sacred Tooth Relic enshrined in Kandy, tea and gems in the misty highlands, a scenic train ride through the hill country, a multi-faith pilgrimage stop at Kataragama, and a slow finish along the southern coast through Mirissa's beaches and turtle conservation centres before Colombo's temples, and markets close out the trip.
